Google Fires 28 Employees Involved in Protest of Israeli Cloud Contract

13:15 18.04.2024

Google has made headlines this week after firing more than two dozen employees who participated in protests against the company's cloud computing contract with the Israeli government. The workers were dismissed following sit-ins at Google's offices in New York and Sunnyvale, California, where they held banners reading "No More Genocide For Profit" and "We Stand with Palestinian, Arab and Muslim Googlers." The protesters even entered the office of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian.

The protests were organized by a group called No Tech For Apartheid, which strongly condemned the dismissals, stating that Google values its $1.2 billion contract with the Israeli government more than its own workers. The group accused Google of retaliation and emphasized that employees have the right to peacefully protest about the terms and conditions of their labor.

The tensions between Google's management and activist employees had been simmering for years over Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion deal with Amazon to provide cloud services to the Israeli government. Some employees expressed concerns that the contract was aiding Israel's military, especially since the conflict in Gaza began in October.

Google spokespersons have defended the firings, stating that the protests violated company policies and disrupted the work of other employees. The company said it would continue to investigate the protests and take further action as needed.

This incident adds to the ongoing debate within Google about its involvement in government contracts, as some employees successfully pushed the company to end a deal with the U.S. Defense Department in 2018. Employees involved in the protests have vowed to continue their activism until Google drops Project Nimbus. Olesya Dmitracova contributed to the reporting of this developing story.
