Ohio Gov. DeWine: Eclipse Day Emergency Plan Ensures Success

22:23 05.04.2024

Ohio is gearing up for Monday's total solar eclipse, expecting potentially hundreds of thousands of visitors to flock to the state. With the event 200 years in the making, the Ohio Emergency Management Agency is taking no chances, with Director Sima Merick stating, "Having 200 years in the making has been very beneficial."

Governor Mike DeWine has activated the Ohio Emergency Operations Center in preparation for the influx of tourists, with the National Guard on standby as a precaution. Various state agencies, including the departments of Transportation, Public Safety, Health, and Natural Resources, as well as the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio National Guard, will be present at the emergency operations centers to ensure a smooth operation.

The Department of Natural Resources is treating the eclipse as if a major fireworks display were taking place in each of its 23 state parks and five wildlife areas simultaneously. Director Mary Mertz announced that all 300 of the state's commissioned wildlife officers will be on duty throughout the weekend.

Transportation Director Jack Marchbanks emphasized the need for travelers to pack extra supplies, such as snacks, water, phone chargers, and paper road maps, in case of cell service disruptions. He also warned against driving in eclipse glasses and advised against stopping along the highway to view the eclipse, as it is both illegal and dangerous.

Col. Charles Jones of the Ohio State Highway Patrol stressed the importance of planning, preparation, and patience for travelers during the eclipse. Governor DeWine recommended that travelers consider delaying their trips home for several hours after the eclipse to allow crowds and traffic to dissipate, or even staying overnight.

With extensive park programming and activities planned around the eclipse, Ohio is taking every precaution to ensure the safety and enjoyment of both residents and visitors during this historic celestial event.
