Microsoft inks deal with France's Mistral AI, an OpenAI rival that has its own chatbot

Microsoft announced a new partnership with the French startup Mistral AI on Monday, signaling a potential shift away from its reliance on OpenAI for generative AI products. Mistral AI, founded less than a year ago, has quickly gained recognition for its innovative and cost-effective AI systems. While financial details of the deal were not disclosed, Microsoft did confirm a small investment in the Paris-based startup.

The announcement comes amidst growing scrutiny of Microsoft's relationship with OpenAI, which has received billions of dollars in investment from the tech giant. Mistral AI's public test version of its chatbot, Le Chat, was met with overwhelming interest, causing temporary unavailability. The company also unveiled its latest large language model, Mistral Large, which is positioned to compete with industry leaders such as GPT-4, Claude 2, and Gemini Pro, and will be available on Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform.

Mistral AI's open-source approach to AI development has garnered attention, with key components of its models being publicly released. The startup, founded by former researchers from Google and Meta, has also attracted significant investor funding, leading to a multibillion-dollar valuation in a short period of time. CEO Arthur Mensch has been vocal in advocating against restrictive regulations on foundation models in the AI industry, arguing that such measures would stifle innovation.

The partnership between Microsoft and Mistral AI marks a significant development in the AI landscape, with the potential to disrupt the dominance of established players like OpenAI. As Mistral continues to expand its collaborations with major cloud providers and release cutting-edge AI products, the tech industry will be closely watching the impact of this new alliance.
