Stunning AP Photos Capture Total Solar Eclipse Across North America

Millions of people across North America were treated to a rare celestial event on Monday as a total solar eclipse darkened the skies from Mazatlan, Mexico to Newfoundland. The eclipse's path of totality crossed 15 U.S. states and was home to 44 million people, with revelers in state parks, city rooftops, and small towns all witnessing the phenomenon.

In Mazatlan, Mexico, the eclipse first cast its shadow over the sparkling beaches before continuing northeast towards Eagle Pass, Texas. Those not in the direct path of totality still experienced a partial eclipse, with the moon transforming the sun into a fiery crescent. The last time North America saw a coast-to-coast total solar eclipse was in 2017, and the next one won't occur until 2045.

People across the continent took to the streets to watch the eclipse, with some capturing the moment on camera or through solar goggles. Clouds parted in some areas, such as atop the New Sweden Evangelical Lutheran Church steeple in Manor, Texas, allowing for a clear view of the eclipse. Sun spots were even visible during the beginning phase of the eclipse in Arlington, Texas.

Overall, it was a breathtaking event that brought people together to witness the beauty and wonder of the natural world. The Associated Press Health and Science Department received support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Science and Educational Media Group for coverage of the eclipse.
