Warning: Popular Android apps concealing deceptive adware and new malware

A new Android Trojan called Xamalicious has been causing concern as it is able to bypass Google's strict Play Store protections. The virus disguises itself as innocent apps related to health, games, horoscope, and productivity, making it difficult for users to identify the threat. Google has taken action and removed the infected apps from the Play Store, but it is believed that hundreds of thousands of users worldwide have already downloaded them. The virus may still be present on devices, posing a significant risk to personal information and security.

The Xamalicious Trojan works by exploiting accessibility features in innocent apps. Once installed on a device, it takes control by unlocking features that are normally restricted. It then scans the device for valuable information such as the operating system, location, contacts, and passwords. Using this information, the Trojan executes a code to take over the device and steal personal data. Although Google has removed the infected apps from the Play Store, it is important to note that this does not automatically remove them from users' devices.

The virus is not acting alone, as researchers at McAfee have discovered a link to another app called Cash Magnet. This app, which can be installed by Xamalicious, carries out fraudulent activities such as clicking ads, installing apps, sending messages, and other actions aimed at stealing money from users.

To protect themselves from Xamalicious and similar threats, users are advised to stick to official app stores such as the Google Play Store, Amazon Appstore, or Samsung Galaxy Store. These platforms have safeguards in place to detect malware, although they are not foolproof. Sideloading, which involves downloading apps from websites, is strongly discouraged as it poses a significant risk. It is also recommended to have good antivirus software installed on all devices to prevent the download of malicious apps.

If a device has already been compromised by malware, immediate action is necessary to minimize damage and secure personal information. Users should change their passwords for all important accounts using a separate device, such as a laptop or desktop, to prevent the hacker from accessing the new passwords. Monitoring accounts and transactions for suspicious activity is crucial, and identity theft protection services can be utilized to track personal information and detect any signs of fraudulent activity. Contacting banks and credit card companies to freeze or cancel cards and alerting contacts to potential phishing attempts are additional steps that should be taken. Finally, restoring the device to factory settings can help eliminate any remaining traces of the malware.

The Xamalicious Trojan serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and taking necessary precautions to protect personal information and devices from emerging threats. By staying informed and following best practices, users can reduce the risk of falling victim to such malicious attacks.
