Apple Complies with Beijing's Order to Remove WhatsApp from China App Store

Apple has removed the popular messaging apps WhatsApp and Threads from its app store in China, following an order from the country's internet watchdog citing national security concerns. The Cyberspace Administration of China ordered the removal of these apps, both owned by Meta, from the China storefront, although they remain available for download on all other storefronts. The move represents a further distancing between tech universes in China and beyond, according to Duncan Clark, chairman of BDA China.

The removal of WhatsApp and Threads by Apple comes amidst a backdrop of plunging iPhone sales in China, with smartphone sales tumbling 10% in the first quarter of this year. Apple has been losing momentum in China due to nationalism, a rough economy, and increased competition from Chinese brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, and OPPO/OnePlus. Despite this, China remains an important market for Apple, as it is the second largest market behind the United States.

Meanwhile, tensions between the United States and China over technology continue to escalate, as the House of Representatives prepares to vote on a bill that would force ByteDance to sell TikTok or have it banned in the United States. U.S. lawmakers have raised concerns about TikTok's ties to China, citing security threats. China has a history of blocking American apps and technology companies, including Facebook and Instagram, also owned by Meta.

The removal of WhatsApp and Threads by Apple in China highlights the ongoing battle over technology and national security concerns between the two countries. The situation is still developing, so stay tuned for updates.
