Microsoft has announced that it will no longer be packaging its Teams videoconferencing app with its Office software, in response to antitrust scrutiny. The tech giant stated on Monday that customers purchasing Office subscriptions will no longer receive Teams bundled with the service, starting this week. This decision will apply globally, following a similar move made in Europe last year. The European Union's executive commission had opened a formal investigation after a complaint was filed in 2020 by Slack Technologies, accusing Microsoft of abusing its market dominance by illegally combining Teams with its Office suite. Microsoft's move to sell the two products separately aims to address concerns of unfair competition and provide clarity for customers. This change will allow customers worldwide to buy Office software without Teams included, while also offering the option to purchase Teams as a standalone product for business users. Microsoft's spokesperson stated that this decision is in response to feedback from the European Commission and will provide multinational companies with more flexibility in their purchasing decisions across different regions.
