Biden administration to invest $6.1 billion in Micron Technology for chip plants

03:37 18.04.2024

The Biden administration has made a groundbreaking agreement to provide $6.1 billion in government support for Micron Technology to establish advanced memory computer chip factories in New York and Idaho. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer played a key role in attracting Micron to Syracuse, where the company plans to build four chip factories. Schumer emphasized that this move signifies the Democrats' commitment to revitalizing the manufacturing sector, with him comparing it to the impact of the Erie Canal in the 19th century.

Micron's investment of $100 billion in upstate New York over the next two decades is expected to create 9,000 direct jobs and 40,000 construction jobs. Additionally, the company announced plans for a $15 billion memory chip plant in Boise, Idaho. This significant boost to the semiconductor industry is made possible by the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, which allocated $52 billion to support domestic chip manufacturing and reduce the risk of chip shortages impacting the U.S. economy and national security.

President Joe Biden highlighted the importance of computer chips in various sectors, from defense to household appliances, during a speech in Pittsburgh. He criticized his predecessor, Donald Trump, for not taking aggressive steps to strengthen the sector and limit China's access to chips. Biden has set a goal for 20% of the world's advanced chips to be produced in the U.S. and has imposed restrictions on chip exports to China.

The deal with Micron represents a significant step towards achieving these goals and securing America's position in the global semiconductor industry. Trump, on the other hand, has defended his approach to China, claiming that his tariffs were effective in pressuring the nation. Biden, however, has indicated plans to expand tariffs on steel and aluminum as part of his administration's strategy to confront China's economic practices.
