Rising International Travel Boosts US Airport Technology Use

A Belgian family of four recently experienced the benefits of the Mobile Passport Control app at Washington Dulles International Airport, bypassing long lines and saving valuable time during their visit to Washington and Chicago. As international travel continues to surge following pandemic-related restrictions, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is implementing more technology-based solutions to accommodate the increasing number of passengers.

During fiscal year 2023, CBP processed over 394 million travelers at ports of entry, a 24% increase from the previous year. The agency is utilizing app-based technologies like the Mobile Passport Control app to streamline the screening process for travelers, resulting in faster processing times and decreased wait times at some of the busiest airports. Last year, a record 4.1 million people used the app to enter the country.

In addition to the Mobile Passport Control app, CBP has also launched an app specifically for Global Entry passengers, allowing them to expedite their customs and passport control procedures. The agency has seen a record 3.2 million applications for the Global Entry program last year and is on track to receive about 4 million applications this year.

Despite the improvements in technology and processing times, some passengers have complained about the lengthy application processing and appointment scheduling for Trusted Traveler Programs. CBP has been working to address these concerns by allowing more people to renew their status without an in-person appointment and increasing appointment availability at enrollment centers.

Starting October 1, fees for some Trusted Traveler Programs will increase, with NEXUS and Global Entry fees going up to $120. However, the fees will now cover all children under 18, regardless of the program. CBP is also planning to introduce E-Gates at airports, where Global Entry passengers can bypass officers at booths and use the app to expedite their customs and passport control process.

Overall, CBP is focused on enhancing the travel experience for international passengers and is continuously working to improve technology and processes to meet the growing demand for Trusted Traveler Programs and expedited entry into the United States.
