Olympic Organizers Embrace AI for Sports Performance

Olympic organizers unveiled their strategy on Friday to incorporate artificial intelligence into sports, aligning themselves with the global trend of embracing rapidly advancing technology. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) detailed their plans to utilize AI in various aspects of the games, including identifying promising athletes, personalizing training methods, and improving judging to ensure fairness. IOC President Thomas Bach emphasized the importance of leveraging AI responsibly to maintain the uniqueness and relevance of the Olympic Games.

The IOC's AI master plan was revealed as the Paris Olympics are set to commence in just under 100 days. The committee's initiatives also extend to using AI to protect athletes from online harassment and enhance the viewing experience for spectators watching from home. The IOC aims to drive the adoption of AI in sports, with plans to implement some projects at the upcoming Paris games.

However, the use of artificial intelligence in security measures for the Paris Olympics has sparked controversy. Local organizers have proposed a video surveillance system with AI-powered cameras to detect potential security risks, such as abandoned packages or crowd surges. While the French government assures that facial recognition technology will not be used, digital watchdog groups express concerns about potential privacy infringements.

Despite the advancements in AI technology, Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn expressed envy for the tools that were not available when she was starting her career. Vonn highlighted the benefits of AI in analyzing performance data and providing valuable insights for athletes to improve their skills. The IOC has collaborated with Intel to identify potential athletes in overlooked regions, using AI to assess the athletic abilities of children in Senegal and recommend suitable sports based on the results.

While embracing the potential of AI, Bach cautioned against relying solely on machines to determine an athlete's future. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that young athletes have the opportunity to explore various sports and not be limited by algorithmic recommendations. As the Paris Olympics approach, the IOC remains committed to utilizing AI in a responsible manner to enhance the Olympic experience for athletes and spectators alike.
