Stay safe during the solar eclipse: Always wear eclipse glasses

19:04 27.03.2024

Millions of people across North America are eagerly anticipating the total solar eclipse set to occur on April 8. However, experts are warning that safety is paramount when viewing this natural phenomenon. Staring directly at the sun during a solar eclipse, or at any other time, can lead to permanent eye damage. The only time it is safe to witness the eclipse with the naked eye is during totality, when the moon completely covers the sun.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson emphasized the importance of using eclipse glasses from reputable vendors to protect one's eyes during the event. Sunglasses are not sufficient, and binoculars or telescopes without proper solar filters can magnify the sun's light, making them unsafe for viewing the eclipse.

To ensure the authenticity of eclipse glasses, experts recommend purchasing them from local science museums or reputable online sellers listed on the American Astronomical Society's website. Legitimate eclipse glasses should block out ultraviolet light and nearly all visible light, with only very bright lights being faintly visible when worn indoors.

For those who do not have eclipse glasses, there are indirect ways to enjoy the eclipse, such as creating a pinhole projector using household materials. Eye experts caution against viewing the eclipse through a phone camera, as the sun's rays can damage the device's digital components.

The dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without proper protection are significant, with the potential for permanent eye damage. Symptoms of solar retinopathy, such as blurred vision and color distortion, can occur without warning. Doctors have seen cases of solar retinopathy after every solar eclipse, underscoring the importance of taking precautions to safeguard one's vision.

While the eclipse promises to be a breathtaking sight, viewers are reminded to prioritize their eye safety by following expert recommendations and using appropriate protective measures. By planning ahead and taking basic precautions, spectators can enjoy the eclipse without putting their vision at risk.
