Google removes links to California news sites for select users

Google has begun removing California news websites from some people's search results as a test, in response to a bill being considered by the California Legislature that would require tech giants like Google, Facebook, and Microsoft to pay a certain percentage of advertising revenue to media companies for linking to their content. The bill aims to address the loss of journalism jobs as legacy media companies struggle to profit in the digital age. More than 2,500 newspapers have closed in the U.S. since 2005, and California has lost over 100 news organizations in the past decade.

The bill, which has bipartisan support in the state Assembly, would provide a lifeline to local news organizations that heavily rely on Google's search engine to distribute their content. However, opponents, including Google and Meta, argue that the legislation is a "link tax" that would primarily benefit out-of-state newspaper chains and hedge funds, while further harming local news organizations.

Google's vice president of news, Richard Gingras, defended the company's contributions to local journalism, highlighting financial grants and training programs for nearly 1,000 local publications in 2023. He emphasized the importance of Google's search engine in connecting users to news websites, generating traffic that helps publishers make money through ads or subscriptions.

Google's decision to temporarily remove links to news websites is not unprecedented, as tech giants have used similar tactics to push back against unwanted legislation in other countries. However, experts warn that Google could also face financial repercussions if it completely blocks news content from its search engine.

The ongoing political debate over Google's dominant search engine comes amid legal challenges alleging antitrust violations. The U.S. Justice Department has accused Google of abusing its power to stifle competition and innovation, with a federal judge expected to issue a decision in the case later this year. Additionally, a federal jury recently found Google guilty of creating an illegal monopoly through its app store for Android devices, leading to potential changes in the company's practices.

As negotiations continue between Google, lawmakers, and news publishers in California, the outcome of the legislation could have significant implications for the future of journalism and the tech industry in the state.
