Red Sea data cables severed in ongoing Houthi attacks

Several Red Sea underwater cables providing internet and telecommunications worldwide have been cut, with officials pointing fingers at Yemen's Houthi rebels as the culprits. The Houthis have denied attacking the lines, claiming disruptions were caused by British and U.S. military operations. Despite the denial, concerns have been raised about the impact of the sabotage on global shipping and data flow through the Red Sea, a crucial route for cargo and energy shipments.

The affected cables include Asia-Africa-Europe 1, the Europe India Gateway, Seacom, and TGN-Gulf, with Hong Kong-based HGC Global Communications stating that the cuts have impacted 25% of the traffic in the Red Sea. The disruption has forced companies like Tata Communications to reroute their services to minimize the impact on their customers.

In addition to the cable cuts, a Houthi missile attack set a ship ablaze in the Gulf of Aden, although no injuries were reported. The vessel, identified as the MSC Sky II, was affiliated with Israel and sustained damage from the attack. The Houthi military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that they will continue to target Israeli-affiliated ships until the Gaza Strip siege is lifted.

The British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center warned of a new attack in the Gulf of Aden, further escalating tensions in the region. The Houthis' continued attacks on ships and subsea cables highlight the ongoing conflict in the region and the challenges faced by international parties trying to navigate the waters of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
