Truth Social Applies for Visa Trump Deemed "Very Bad" for Americans

08:56 23.04.2024

The Trump Media & Technology Group, the company behind Truth Social founded by former President Donald Trump, applied for an H-1B visa for a worker at a $65,000 annual salary, the lowest wage category allowed under the program. Despite Trump's previous criticism of the H-1B visa program, the company was approved for the visa a few months later. The company claims it did not hire the worker and swiftly terminated the process once current management learned of the application made under prior management.

This move by the Trump Media & Technology Group has raised eyebrows, especially considering Trump's past statements about the program. Trump had previously called the H-1B visa program "very bad" and "unfair," stating that he shouldn't be allowed to use it. However, Trump's companies had not petitioned for H-1B visas until Truth Social was created.

The H-1B visa program is a common tool used by tech companies to hire skilled workers, with companies in the professional, scientific, and technical services fields accounting for more than 60% of the total visas granted. Economists like Nicolas Morales have found that the program has been beneficial for small companies, helping them stay in business and increase their chances of survival.

Critics of the H-1B program argue that companies often offer salaries in the lower wage categories to foreign workers, potentially disadvantaging American workers. Trump's administration had taken steps to reform the program, with the "Buy American and Hire American" executive order directing Cabinet members to suggest reforms to protect American workers.

The application by Trump Media & Technology Group for an H-1B visa has sparked debate and scrutiny, highlighting the complexities and contradictions surrounding immigration policies and practices in the business world.
