US Considers Regulating Connected Vehicles to Prevent Tracking Abusers

22:09 28.02.2024

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is considering new regulations to prevent domestic abusers from tracking their victims through vehicles that are connected wirelessly. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel is leading the initiative, stating that survivors of domestic abuse should not have to choose between giving up their vehicle and feeling safe. This comes after Congress passed the "Safe Connections Act," giving the FCC the authority to help abused partners.

Nearly all new vehicles come equipped with convenience features that use telecommunications to locate cars in parking lots, start the engine remotely, and connect with emergency responders. However, these features can also be used by abusers to track their victims. The FCC is now exploring whether they have the power to require automakers to separate connected car services for abused partners, similar to rules already in place for cell service providers.

Rosenworcel recently sent a letter to nine major U.S. automakers requesting details about their connected car systems and plans to support those who have been harassed and stalked by domestic abusers. Responses from the automakers varied, with some like Toyota and Ford offering options for partners to disconnect their vehicles from apps and disable location tracking. However, other automakers were less specific about such options.

If approved, the proposed rule by the FCC would open up a public and industry comment period on connected car services. The agency is determined to ensure that survivors of abuse have the ability to separate from their abusers without fear of being tracked through their vehicles. This initiative comes after reports in The New York Times highlighted how connected cars are being used as tools of abuse in relationships.
