Astronomers discover record-breaking quasar with black hole devouring sun a day

02:00 20.02.2024

Astronomers have made a groundbreaking discovery, identifying what may be the brightest and most violent place in the universe - a quasar 500 trillion times brighter than the sun, with a black hole growing at an unprecedented rate. The quasar, known as J0529-4351, is located 12 billion light years away and was initially mistaken for a star when first spotted in 1980. However, recent observations in Australia and Chile's Atacama Desert revealed its true nature as a quasar. The massive black hole at the center of this cosmic phenomenon is estimated to be between 17 and 19 billion times the mass of the sun, consuming the equivalent of a sun a day as it pulls in vast amounts of gas. The rotating disk of gas surrounding the black hole has been likened to a cosmic hurricane, emitting energy more than 500 trillion times brighter than the sun. Lead author Christian Wolf from the Australian National University described the quasar as "the most violent place that we know in the universe." The research, published in the journal Nature Astronomy, has garnered significant attention from the scientific community, with Yale University astrophysicist Priyamvada Natarajan noting the excitement of discovering such a powerful and previously misclassified object. Further observations are needed to fully understand the growth rate of this record-breaking quasar, shedding light on the early days of the universe and the extreme forces at play in the cosmos.
