From doinks to SpongeBob, technology to play a huge role in the CBS presentation of the Super Bowl

CBS Sports will introduce a new camera angle during Sunday's Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Known as the "doink cam," the camera will be placed inside the uprights of the goalposts, providing a unique perspective on field goals and other plays near the end zone. The idea for the doink cam came about when CBS Sports' Jason Cohen witnessed a field goal attempt by Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker during last year's Super Bowl that bounced off the left upright. Cohen immediately texted someone at the league's broadcasting department about placing cameras inside the uprights, and now his idea will become a reality.

The doink cam is just one of many technological innovations that CBS will utilize during the game. CBS will have six 4K cameras in each goalpost, with two facing outward on a 45-degree angle and one facing inward to capture the ball going through the uprights. These cameras will also have zoom and super slow-motion capabilities, allowing viewers to see how close a kick was to going inside the uprights. The cameras were tested during a preseason game and a regular-season game earlier this year.

In addition to the doink cam, CBS will have a total of 165 cameras for the Super Bowl, including cameras positioned throughout the Las Vegas strip. There will also be 23 augmented reality cameras that both CBS and Nickelodeon will use. The Nickelodeon broadcast will feature SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star appearing to call the game alongside broadcasters Noah Eagle and Nate Burleson. The voices of SpongeBob and Patrick, Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke, will be in the booth wearing green suits to allow their animated characters to appear on screen.

CBS executive producer Harold Bryant is excited about the technological advancements that will be showcased during the broadcast. He believes that the doink cam and other camera angles will enhance the storytelling of the game. However, he also emphasized that the technology will only be used when it adds value to the broadcast and the moment, rather than forcing it in for the sake of novelty.

The introduction of the doink cam during the Super Bowl could potentially lead to its incorporation as a standard feature in future NFL broadcasts. Super Bowls often serve as testing grounds for new ideas that eventually become part of regular game broadcasts. The doink cam, along with other unique camera angles, could provide viewers with a fresh perspective on the game and enhance their viewing experience.
