Former Facebook Diversity Leader Admits to Stealing $4 Million

In a shocking revelation that has sent shockwaves through the tech industry, an Atlanta woman has pleaded guilty to stealing over $4 million from Facebook while she held a prominent position as an executive at the company. Barbara Furlow-Smiles, who served as the lead strategist, global head of employee resource groups, and diversity engagement at Facebook, Inc., which is now known as Meta, was involved in this elaborate scheme for almost four years, from January 2017 to September 2021.

According to the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, Ryan K. Buchanan's Office, Furlow-Smiles exploited her position of trust as a global diversity executive to defraud the company of millions of dollars. Buchanan stated, "This defendant abused a position of trust as a global diversity executive for Facebook to defraud the company of millions of dollars, ignoring the insidious consequences of undermining the importance of her DEI mission."

The details of Furlow-Smiles' fraudulent activities are truly astonishing. She used her Facebook expense account to finance an extravagant lifestyle split between California and Georgia. The U.S. Attorney revealed that Furlow-Smiles fraudulently utilized Facebook funds to cover a wide range of personal expenses, including payments to hair stylists, babysitters, and even an exorbitant sum of $18,000 for preschool tuition.

The cunning nature of Furlow-Smiles' scheme becomes apparent when examining the methods she employed. She linked her company credit cards to popular payment platforms such as PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App, allowing her to make payments to others for services that were never actually provided. The recipients of these payments were often friends, relatives, and associates who would then return a portion of the money to Furlow-Smiles as kickbacks. To further complicate matters, she would create inflated invoices to legitimize these transactions. In essence, Furlow-Smiles manipulated a network of vendors to siphon off funds from Facebook.

Buchanan's Office stated, "She even involved relatives, friends, and other associates in her crimes, all to fund a lavish lifestyle through fraud rather than hard and honest work." The extent to which Furlow-Smiles involved those close to her in this illegal operation is truly shocking.

As news of this scandal broke, the tech community was left reeling. Facebook, now Meta, has been at the forefront of efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the industry. Furlow-Smiles' actions have undermined the importance of these initiatives and stained the reputation of the company.

Sentencing for Barbara Furlow-Smiles has been scheduled for March 19, 2024. As the case progresses, the implications of this high-profile theft will undoubtedly be felt throughout the tech world. Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation, stating, "We are cooperating with law enforcement on the case regarding this former program manager, and we will continue to do so."

As the public awaits the conclusion of this scandal, questions will undoubtedly be raised about the effectiveness of internal controls and oversight within major tech companies. The repercussions of this shocking betrayal of trust will reverberate through the industry for years to come, serving as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that lurk behind the scenes even at the most prominent and seemingly secure companies.
