NASA's new mega moon rocket, Orion crew capsule

In a monumental achievement for NASA, the Orion capsule successfully reached the moon on Monday, marking the first visit to the lunar surface since the Apollo program 50 years ago. The $4.1 billion test flight, which began last Wednesday, reached a record-breaking orbit with test dummies onboard in place of astronauts. Excitement filled Houston's Johnson Space Center as workers witnessed the capsule approach the moon, capturing breathtaking footage of the pale blue planet and the looming moon over 230,000 miles away.

Flight controllers and officials at Mission Control in Houston were thrilled by the success of the mission, with flight director Judd Frieling describing the atmosphere as "giddy." Even the flight controllers themselves were left "absolutely astounded" by the achievement. The critical engine firing, which occurred on the far side of the moon, had a half-hour communication blackout, leaving flight controllers in suspense until the capsule emerged on the other side. However, the anxiety quickly turned to jubilation as the capsule's cameras transmitted an image of Earth-a tiny blue dot surrounded by darkness.

After regaining radio contact, Orion accelerated well beyond 5,000 mph and soared above Tranquility Base, where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin famously landed in 1969. Although there were no photos taken during this pass due to darkness, managers promised to attempt capturing images on the return flyby in two weeks. The successful slingshot around the moon provided the necessary speed for the capsule to enter a sweeping, lopsided lunar orbit. A subsequent engine firing on Friday will place Orion in that orbit.

In the upcoming days, Orion will continue to break records as it shatters NASA's distance record for a spacecraft designed for astronauts, surpassing the nearly 250,000 miles set by Apollo 13 in 1970. By next Monday, Orion is expected to reach a maximum distance from Earth of nearly 270,000 miles, further solidifying its place in history.

This mission is a stepping stone for NASA's future lunar program. The Orion capsule, although currently without a lunar lander, will serve as a key component for lunar landings planned with SpaceX's Starship in 2025. Additionally, astronauts are set to embark on a journey around the moon as early as 2024 with Orion.

Mission manager Mike Sarafin expressed his delight with the progress of the mission, giving it a "cautiously optimistic A-plus" so far. The Space Launch System rocket, the most powerful ever built by NASA, performed exceptionally well in its debut. However, there were minor issues with the navigational star trackers and the power system that required workarounds. Furthermore, the rocket caused more damage than expected at the Kennedy Space Center launch pad, as the force from the 8.8 million pounds of liftoff thrust tore off the blast doors of the elevator. Nevertheless, Sarafin assured reporters that the pad damage would be repaired in time for the next launch.

Overall, the successful test flight of the Orion capsule to the moon represents a major milestone in NASA's pursuit of lunar exploration. The mission sets the stage for future manned missions and paves the way for further discoveries and advancements in space exploration. As the world eagerly awaits the return of Orion, scheduled for a Pacific splashdown on December 11, the achievements of this historic mission will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on space exploration.
