Veteran reporter's 'Burn Book' exposes love and loathing in Silicon Valley

15:54 26.02.2024

In her incendiary memoir "Burn Book," longtime Silicon Valley reporter Kara Swisher takes a scathing look at the tech industry and the once-idealistic entrepreneurs who have become disconnected from reality. Swisher paints Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a harsh light, calling Zuckerberg the most damaging man in tech and Musk the most disappointing. Despite regularly granting her exclusive interviews and feeding her scoops in the past, both tech moguls have faced criticism in Swisher's book. Swisher, who has become synonymous with Silicon Valley, has moved to Washington, D.C., but remains plugged into the tech world and is particularly concerned about the rise of artificial intelligence.

Swisher hopes Burn Book serves as a warning to both the technology industry and governments around the world, urging them to avoid repeating the same missteps of the past 20 years as AI becomes more prevalent. She emphasizes the need for accountability and consequences for tech industry leaders. Swisher, who initially didn't want to write another book, finally got on a roll with the help of co-writer Nell Scovell, leading her to disassemble some of the world's richest people in her book.

Despite the criticism she levels at tech leaders, Swisher also highlights the industry's "mensches," including Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and investor Mark Cuban. She also has kind words for former Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, former Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang, and Apple CEOs Tim Cook and Steve Jobs. Looking ahead, Swisher hopes to look back kindly on the tech leaders at the forefront of AI, particularly praising OpenAI CEO Sam Altman for his ability to hold conflicting ideas and his techno-optimism.

Throughout her book, Swisher doesn't shy away from calling out tech leaders for their shortcomings. In one instance, Musk used a pejorative term to describe Swisher in an email, leading her to criticize him as a narcissist in desperate need of attention. Despite potential blowback, Swisher remains steadfast in her commitment to telling the truth about the tech industry and its leaders.
