High-speed rail line linking Las Vegas and Los Angeles area gets $3B Biden administration pledge

The long-awaited high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area has received a major boost with a pledge of $3 billion from the Biden administration. Nevada elected officials announced the funding for the $12 billion project, led by Brightline West, which has been in discussion for decades. U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen confirmed that all necessary right-of-way and environmental approvals, as well as labor agreements, are now in place for work to begin along the 218-mile Interstate 15 corridor. While no specific start date was announced, it is hoped that electric-powered trains will be operational by the time Los Angeles hosts the Summer Olympics in 2028.

"We're ready to get to work," said Wes Edens, founder and chairman of Brightline, expressing his eagerness to begin construction. A visit by President Joe Biden to Las Vegas, coinciding with an event on Friday, may further demonstrate support for the project. In April, a bipartisan group, led by U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen, along with all of Nevada's elected federal lawmakers and four House members from California, requested up to $3.75 billion in federal infrastructure funds as part of a public-private partnership.

The high-speed rail line aims to significantly reduce travel time between Las Vegas and Southern California. Planners estimate that trains traveling at nearly 200 mph could cut the current four-hour journey by half. The service would run from a station in Las Vegas, through Victorville, California, and connect to a suburban Los Angeles light rail line in the city of Rancho Cucamonga. This improved transportation option would alleviate the notorious traffic congestion experienced on Interstate 15 near the Nevada-California state line, especially during weekends or at the end of holidays when traffic jams can stretch for up to 15 miles.

The benefits of the high-speed rail line extend beyond decreased travel times. "Connecting Las Vegas and Southern California by high-speed rail will create tens of thousands of good-paying union jobs, boost our Southern Nevada tourism economy, and finally help us cut down on I-15 traffic," stated U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto. The project is also expected to have a positive impact on the local economy, providing a significant boost to tourism in Southern Nevada.

The idea of a high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and Southern California has been discussed since 2001, with U.S. Rep. Dina Titus, who represents the Las Vegas Strip, acknowledging the long history of the proposal. Over the years, the project faced numerous setbacks and name changes before being temporarily delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the involvement of Brightline Holdings LLC, a Florida-based company that successfully built and operates the only privately-owned intercity passenger railroad in the U.S., brings hope for the realization of the high-speed rail line. The company's existing service on Florida's east coast, connecting Miami and Orlando, has been well-received, with trains reaching speeds of up to 125 mph.

While the Las Vegas to Los Angeles high-speed rail line is a significant development, there are other similar projects being considered across the country. These include a proposed 240-mile line in Texas between Dallas and Houston and a 500-mile system linking Los Angeles and San Francisco. The latter project, however, has faced challenges such as rising costs, funding uncertainties, and delays.

With the Biden administration's pledge of $3 billion, the high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area is finally gaining momentum. Once completed, it is expected to revolutionize travel between the two cities, boosting the economy, creating jobs, and providing a much-needed solution to congestion on Interstate 15.
