Google will delete inactive accounts within days. Here's how to save your data.

Google users who want to prevent their accounts from being deleted should take action before December 1st. This is due to Google's updated inactive account policy, which was announced back in May. Under this policy, accounts that have not been used in at least two years are at risk of being deleted. Google implemented this policy to address security issues, as inactive accounts are more likely to be compromised. These accounts often have outdated passwords, lack two-factor authentication, and receive fewer security checks. Hackers can hijack these accounts for malicious activities such as spamming or identity theft.

To prevent their accounts from being deleted, users should sign in at least once every two years. Other activities that count as account activity include sending or scrolling through emails, using Google search, and watching YouTube videos while signed into the Google account. Existing subscriptions set up through the Google account also count as activity. It's important to note that Google Photos content may also be deleted after two years of inactivity.

There are a few exceptions to the inactive account policy. Only personal Google accounts that have been inactive for two years or more will be affected. Accounts created for organizations, such as schools or companies, will not be impacted. Additionally, accounts managing active minor accounts, accounts with gift card balances, and accounts used for ongoing Google product purchases or subscriptions will not be deleted. Google has also stated that there are no plans to delete accounts with YouTube videos, but confirmation from the company is still pending.

Google provides tools to help users manage and backup their data. Google Takeout allows users to download and export account data outside of Google at any time. The Inactive Account Manager feature lets users choose what happens to their account and data if it becomes inactive, including the option to send select files to trusted contacts or delete the account entirely. For deceased users, Google can work with immediate family members to close the account or provide some account content on a case-by-case basis, without sharing login credentials.

In summary, Google users with inactive accounts should take action to prevent their accounts from being deleted. Signing in at least once every two years, engaging in account activities, and using the provided tools for data management and backup are crucial steps to protect accounts and their contents.
