Meet Emmett Shear: OpenAI's Dynamic New CEO

07:30 21.11.2023

In a surprising turn of events, OpenAI, a prominent artificial intelligence company, has appointed Emmett Shear, the former head of Twitch, as its interim CEO. This decision comes just days after the company's controversial firing of its well-known leader, Sam Altman. The sudden change in leadership has caused upheaval in the world of AI and has raised questions about the company's integrity.

Emmett Shear announced his new role on Monday morning with a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. In his statement, Shear acknowledged that the handling of Altman's firing had been poorly managed and had damaged trust within the company. He pledged to shed light on Altman's departure by hiring an independent investigator to conduct a thorough review and provide a report within 30 days.

Shear, who co-founded the Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch, is well-acquainted with the tech industry. Twitch gained recognition for its focus on gaming and became a popular platform for streamers. However, it has also faced scrutiny in recent years due to instances where mass shootings were livestreamed on the site. Shear left Twitch in March due to personal reasons.

Prior to his role at Twitch, Shear served as a visiting partner at Y Combinator, a well-known startup incubator. Both Shear and Altman are alumni of Y Combinator's first class of startup founders. Altman later became the president of Y Combinator.

Meanwhile, Microsoft, a major investor in OpenAI, has announced that it is bringing in Altman and former OpenAI President Greg Brockman to lead its new advanced AI research team. This move by Microsoft is seen as an attempt to stabilize the situation and maintain its investment in the company.

The appointment of Shear as interim CEO has received mixed reactions. Investors, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, have expressed excitement about the new management team. However, some OpenAI employees have called for the resignation of the board and the reinstatement of Altman. A letter signed by hundreds of employees has raised concerns about the board's decision-making process and its replacement of Mira Murati, who was initially named as interim CEO.

In response to the controversy, Shear has stated that he took the role because he believes OpenAI is one of the most important companies in existence. He has expressed his commitment to protect and further grow the company. Shear has outlined three objectives to be accomplished within the next 30 days, including the hiring of an independent investigator, ongoing communication with stakeholders, and reforming the company's management and leadership teams.

The situation at OpenAI remains precarious as the company seeks to restore stability and regain the trust of its employees and investors. Shear's appointment as interim CEO marks a significant change in leadership, and his actions in the coming days will be closely scrutinized. As the AI industry continues to evolve, the future of OpenAI hangs in the balance.
