NYPD targets critics on social media, sparking concerns

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has recently come under criticism for their aggressive and controversial use of social media to promote their policies and attack other civil servants. The department's "NYPD: Most Wanted" video, featuring dramatic footage of police raids and arrests, has sparked debate over the appropriateness of using public resources for such purposes. Despite backlash from former police officials and civil liberties groups, the NYPD has doubled down on their social media strategy, with plans to release a long-form documentary series and encourage police chiefs to be more vocal online.

One recent incident involved Chief of Patrol John Chell lashing out at a state judge on social media, accusing her of releasing a predator accused of theft and drug possession. The message was later found to have misidentified the judge and prosecutor involved, but not before generating hateful comments and criticism. Critics, such as Steven Zeidman of CUNY Law, have expressed concern over the NYPD's use of social media to intimidate the judiciary and spread fear and hate.

The escalation in the NYPD's social media content and rhetoric has been attributed to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a former police captain. Official NYPD accounts have targeted journalists, threatened protesters, and highlighted transit crimes in recent weeks. The department's social media strategy has also included videos of Adams rallying officers before raids, with descriptions of suspects as "migrants preying on vulnerable New Yorkers."

Former NYPD official Zachary Tumin noted that police officials were initially instructed to maintain a positive tone on social media and avoid personal attacks. However, the recent use of social media by the NYPD to criticize judges and policies, such as changes to bail laws, has raised concerns about the department's approach. The lack of public-facing guidance on how police are using social media platforms has also been highlighted by the Brennan Center for Justice.

Despite the backlash and criticism, the NYPD shows no signs of backing down from their controversial social media strategy. The department's new approach, which includes plans for "long-form YouTube" content, indicates a continued effort to engage the public and influence policy through online platforms. The NYPD's use of social media is likely to remain a topic of debate and scrutiny in the coming months.
