Last chance to plan for April 8 total solar eclipse!

18:29 02.03.2024

With just a few weeks left until the total solar eclipse on April 8, the race is on to find the perfect spot to witness this rare celestial event. For those lucky enough to live inside the 115-mile-wide path of totality, all they need to do is step outside and put on their special eclipse glasses. But for the millions outside the path, or those looking to increase their chances of clear skies, planning is key.

Retired Canadian meteorologist Jay Anderson suggests that Mexico and Texas offer the best odds of sunny skies, based on his studies of satellite data over the past 20 years. However, he also points to promising spots along the Great Lakes for prime viewing. The key advice for eclipse chasers is to stay flexible and keep an eye on the local weather forecast about 10 days out, making plans based on the three-day forecast.

Veteran eclipse chasers like Tom Schultz and Anne Marie Adkins are taking different approaches to ensure they have the best experience possible. Schultz is turning the eclipse into a family reunion in Rochester, New York, while Adkins is joining an astronomer-led tour to Mazatlan, Mexico, in hopes of clear skies. Both know that it's a gamble and that weather can be unpredictable.

Post-eclipse traffic is a concern for many, especially in rural areas like the Texas Hill Country. Patricia Moore of the Bandera visitors center is preparing for crowds after the eclipse, drawing on lessons learned from last year's "ring of fire" eclipse.

Cities and towns along the eclipse path are gearing up for watch parties and activities to attract visitors. Niagara Falls is expecting July Fourth-sized crowds, while Waco, Texas, will host science-themed activities outside Baylor's McClane stadium. Cruise ships off the Mexico coast may be sold out, but there are other watery options like a ride on the Victorian Princess paddle-wheeler on Lake Erie.

For a unique viewing experience, visitors can head to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio, or the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas for a tailgate fundraising party. In northern Maine, a scale model of the solar system along U.S. Route 1 will be on display, with a new 23-foot-tall roadside sun unveiled at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on eclipse day.

Despite the uncertainties, Anderson emphasizes that witnessing a total eclipse is a "special magical moment" that is well worth the travel. As he puts it, "It's the Taylor Swift of natural events.".
