Tech Tip: Skip the Rice and Save Your Smartphone

13:55 29.02.2024

Recently, there has been a lot of debate and conflicting advice on how to properly dry a wet smartphone. Apple even issued a warning against using rice to dry out a phone, stating that rice particles could potentially damage the device. So what should you do if your phone gets wet? First, dry off the exterior with a towel or cloth and remove the SIM card and battery if possible. Apple recommends tapping the phone gently with the connector ports facing down to allow liquid to flow out. Samsung suggests using a cotton bud to remove moisture from the earphone jack and charging port, while advising against using rice to dry the device. Instead, silica gel beads are recommended as a drying agent.

It is important to avoid using a hair dryer, compressed air, or putting the phone in a freezer or on a radiator. Do not power up or charge the phone with a cable, but wireless charging is acceptable in emergencies. It is best to leave the phone in a well-ventilated area to dry out, as recommended by both Apple and Samsung. Google suggests leaving the device to dry at room temperature.

In terms of water resistance, most phones nowadays are designed to be water-resistant, not waterproof. Apple's iPhone 7 and newer models are splash and water-resistant, with the iPhone XS and newer models having an IP68 rating allowing for submersion for up to 30 minutes. Samsung's Galaxy Android phones also feature similar water resistance ratings. However, it is important to note that water resistance diminishes over time due to normal wear and tear.

In conclusion, it is best to be cautious when dealing with a wet smartphone and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for drying and water resistance. Waiting a few days before attempting to power up the device is advised, and if in doubt, bring the phone to a service center for inspection.
