Germany to store carbon dioxide underground offshore

15:53 26.02.2024

Germany is pushing ahead with plans to enable underground carbon storage at offshore sites in an effort to combat climate change, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck announced on Monday. The country, known for its energy-intensive industries, aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2045. Habeck's proposed "carbon management strategy" includes transporting carbon dioxide and storing it under the sea in Germany's exclusive economic zone, with the possibility of land storage in the future pending approval from state governments.

While opponents argue that carbon capture and storage technology is unproven at scale and less effective than renewable energy sources like solar and wind, Habeck believes it is a mature and safe solution. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that time has run out and that waiting is no longer an option. With global temperatures on track to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius, Habeck stressed the importance of taking action now to avoid catastrophic climate change impacts.

Germany's plans to store CO2 under the sea will take a few years to implement, and Habeck highlighted the need for coordination with other European initiatives, such as Denmark's ambitious project to bury carbon dioxide beneath the North Sea. However, environmental group Greenpeace criticized the German government's approach, arguing that it favors the energy and heavy industries and allows them to continue emitting carbon without exploring more sustainable alternatives.

Overall, Germany's move towards underground carbon storage reflects the country's commitment to addressing climate change and transitioning towards a greener economy. While there are concerns and criticisms, Habeck remains optimistic about the potential of carbon capture and storage technology in achieving climate neutrality.
