Tech Tips: The Importance of Apple's Stolen Device Protection

Apple Introduces Stolen Device Protection to Combat Rising Phone Thefts

In response to the increasing number of phone thefts reported worldwide, Apple has released a new software update for iPhones and iPads that includes a crucial feature called Stolen Device Protection. This feature aims to prevent thieves from wiping stolen phones for resale or gaining access to important accounts such as Apple ID. The update, known as version 17.3, urges users to activate the new security option immediately.

Stolen Device Protection, which is buried within the iPhone's settings, adds an extra layer of security to safeguard users' digital lives. It addresses a vulnerability that thieves have exploited, allowing them to lock victims out of their Apple accounts, delete files from iCloud, and even access passwords stored in the Keychain password manager. With anecdotal evidence suggesting a surge in phone thefts, Apple's introduction of this feature couldn't come at a better time.

So, how does Stolen Device Protection work? The feature keeps track of a user's familiar locations, such as their home or workplace, and adds additional biometric security measures if someone attempts to use the device outside of these places. By reducing the reliance on passcodes, which can easily be stolen or coerced from victims, the feature emphasizes biometric features like Face ID or Touch ID, which are much harder to duplicate.

For instance, if a thief snatches an iPhone in a crowded bar and attempts to erase its contents and settings for resale, Stolen Device Protection will require a Face ID or Touch ID scan to verify the rightful owner. The feature does not allow the use of passcodes or any other backup methods. Other actions, such as using saved passwords or payment methods, turning off Lost Mode, applying for a new Apple Card, or setting up a new device, will also trigger the feature if the device is not in a familiar location.

To further deter thieves from accessing critical security settings, a second layer of protection has been implemented. If someone tries to sign out of an Apple ID account, change the passcode, or reset the phone while it's in an unfamiliar location, they will need to authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, and then perform a second facial or fingerprint scan. Additionally, changing an Apple ID password, updating security settings, adding or removing biometric features, and disabling the Find My device feature or Stolen Device Protection will also activate this security delay.

Activating Stolen Device Protection is a straightforward process. Users need to download and update their iPhone or iPad with the latest iOS update. Then, they should navigate to their settings, scroll down to "Face ID & Passcode" or "Touch ID & Passcode," and enter their passcode. Scrolling further down will reveal the Stolen Device Protection option, which can be turned on or off depending on the iPhone model.

It is important to note that Stolen Device Protection applies to iPhone XS and newer models, including the second- and third-generation SE models. To ensure the feature is available, users must first activate two-factor authentication and the Find My device feature for their Apple ID account.

With the rising prevalence of phone thefts reported globally, Apple's introduction of Stolen Device Protection brings much-needed security to users' digital lives. By adding an extra layer of protection and emphasizing biometric features, Apple aims to make it significantly harder for thieves to access crucial functions and settings on stolen devices.
