At CES 2024, the focus on carbon-neutral technology has largely been on electric vehicles (EVs), but hydrogen energy has managed to make a comeback thanks to two major players in the automotive industry. Hyundai took the opportunity to showcase its plans for utilizing hydrogen energy at the tech and gadget show in Las Vegas. In addition to manufacturing vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells, the South Korean automaker expressed its intention to expand into energy production, storage, and transportation, aiming to contribute to a "hydrogen society." Jose Mu?±oz, President and Global Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor Co., stated that this expansion is not only technologically feasible but will also make economic sense in the future.

Meanwhile, Bosch Mobility, an automotive supplier, announced during its CES 2024 event that it plans to launch its first hydrogen combustion engine this year. This development is seen as a crucial step towards reducing global carbon emissions caused by human activities. Both Bosch and Hyundai have been encouraged by investments such as the $7 billion that the U.S. government is dedicating to the development of hydrogen infrastructure.

In terms of EVs, Honda unveiled two concept vehicles, named the Saloon and "Space-Hub," adopting its Zero Series approach to EV development. This approach focuses on creating models that are "thin, light, and wise," with the specific goal of minimizing battery size and weight. Kia, on the other hand, introduced a trio of electric vans that can easily swap body modules, allowing them to serve various purposes such as cargo hauling and taxi services. Production of these vans will commence in South Korea in 2025. Additionally, VinFast, an electric upstart based in Vietnam, revealed its electric truck concept, the VF Wild, during the event.

Improvements in in-car technology ecosystems were also showcased at CES 2024. Mercedes-Benz presented updates to its infotainment systems, including a new AI-powered virtual assistant that aims to personalize interactions between drivers and their vehicles. This update will integrate the AI with functions for automated driving, seating comfort, data displays, and charging. While Mercedes focuses on enhancing its proprietary in-car ecosystems, other automakers are partnering with Google to pre-install popular apps like Google Maps and Assistant in their vehicles. Google announced at CES 2024 that select models from Nissan, Lincoln (Ford Motor's luxury brand), and others will have Google built-in this year, with Porsche following suit in 2025. Even Mercedes-Benz is incorporating Google apps into its own technology.

Solid-state batteries were also a topic of discussion at CES 2024. Honda revealed its plans for the Zero Series and wider EV advancements, specifically highlighting its independent development of solid-state batteries. Executive Vice President Shinji Aoyama stated that Honda aims to apply solid-state batteries to the Zero Series by the late 2020s. Solid-state batteries are considered essential for mass commercialization of battery-powered EVs due to their stability and potential for increased power. Mitsuru Kariya, who leads Honda Motor's research and development group for EV technology, explained that solid-state batteries have higher energy density, allowing for smaller and lighter EVs with improved range and fuel economy. Toyota is also invested in solid-state batteries and recently partnered with Japanese oil company Idemitsu to work on their production.

Overall, CES 2024 has showcased the advancements and potential of carbon-neutral technologies in the automotive industry, with a focus on hydrogen energy, EV development, in-car tech ecosystems, and solid-state batteries. These innovations demonstrate the commitment of major automakers to reduce carbon emissions and explore sustainable alternatives for the future of transportation.
