Microsoft is set to reshape the next generation of keyboards with the introduction of a special “Copilot key” that summons its AI chatbot. This move comes as the tech giant aims to capitalize on its partnership with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, and position itself as a gateway for generative AI technology. The inclusion of an AI button on laptops marks Microsoft's latest effort to dominate the AI applications market, despite the unresolved ethical and legal issues surrounding the technology.

The keyboard redesign, Microsoft's most significant change to PC keyboards since the introduction of the Windows key in the 1990s, will feature the Copilot logo near the space bar. On some computers, it will replace the right “CTRL” key, while on others, it will replace a menu key. This move by Microsoft is not unprecedented, as other companies like Apple and Google have also introduced customized keys on their keyboards.

Apple, with its “Command” key, was a pioneer in the concept of customized keys in the 1980s. Google, on the other hand, experimented with an AI-specific key on its now-discontinued Pixelbook to launch its voice assistant. However, Microsoft's dominance in the PC market, with licensing agreements with major manufacturers such as Lenovo, Dell, and HP, gives it a significant advantage. According to market research firm IDC, approximately 82% of all desktop computers, laptops, and workstations run on Windows, compared to 9% for Apple's operating system and just over 6% for Google's.

While Microsoft has not disclosed which computer manufacturers will be incorporating the Copilot button, some of these companies are expected to unveil their new models at the upcoming CES gadget show in Las Vegas. This move by Microsoft is seen as a symbolic kickoff to a highly competitive year, as tech companies strive to outdo each other in the AI applications market.

However, Microsoft and OpenAI are currently facing legal challenges. The New York Times recently filed a lawsuit against both companies, alleging copyright infringement in the development of tools like ChatGPT and Copilot, previously known as Bing Chat. These legal battles highlight the complex legal and ethical issues surrounding AI technology.

Despite these challenges, Microsoft's push to incorporate AI buttons into keyboards signifies its determination to establish itself as a leader in the AI applications market. With its strong market presence and partnerships with major manufacturers, Microsoft is poised to shape the future of keyboards and AI technology.
