Naughty Dog Scraps The Last of Us Multiplayer Game

13:04 15.12.2023

In a disappointing turn of events for fans of The Last of Us franchise, developer Naughty Dog has announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated online multiplayer game that was in development. The Last of Us series, which has sold over 37 million copies since its debut in 2013 and inspired a successful HBO TV adaptation, has been known for its immersive single-player, story-driven experiences. However, the studio had decided to venture into the world of online multiplayer with this upcoming project, similar to popular titles like Call of Duty and Fortnite.

Naughty Dog explained in a blog post that the decision to cancel the game was an "incredibly difficult" one, but it was made after realizing that the project's scope would have a negative impact on future titles. The studio expressed understanding that the news would be tough for fans and stated that they were equally crushed by the decision. They emphasized that their commitment to single-player, narrative-driven games, such as the acclaimed Uncharted series, had defined their heritage as a studio.

While Naughty Dog has previously included multiplayer modes in their games, this was the first time they were developing a standalone online multiplayer experience. The Last of Us had a popular online mode called Factions, which pitted players against each other in competitive shooter matches. Initially, this mode was meant to be a part of The Last of Us: Part II, released in 2020, but it was spun off into a separate release that has now been canceled.

The studio expressed immense pride in everyone involved in the project and mentioned that the learnings and technological investments from this game would shape the future development of their projects. Despite canceling the online multiplayer game, Naughty Dog assured fans that they had more than one ambitious, brand new single-player game in the works.

Naughty Dog's decision to cancel the online multiplayer game comes as they prepare to release a PlayStation 5 re-release of The Last of Us: Part II in January. While the studio has received critical acclaim for their games, they have also faced criticism for releasing multiple versions of the original game between 2013 and 2022, leading to accusations of milking the franchise. The popularity of the HBO adaptation likely influenced their decision to re-release the game on the next-generation console.

The cancellation of The Last of Us Online was met with mixed reactions from the gaming community. Some agreed with Naughty Dog's choice to focus on single-player games, while others questioned the studio's lack of foresight in starting the online multiplayer project in the first place.

Fans of The Last of Us Factions, the limited in-game online multiplayer experience, were particularly disappointed by the cancellation. It remains to be seen how Naughty Dog's decision will impact the future of the franchise and their reputation as a leading game developer.
