Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd steps down as boss of dating app

Bumble, one of the largest dating apps in the world, is undergoing a major leadership change as its founder and chief executive, Whitney Wolfe Herd, steps down after nearly a decade at the helm. Wolfe Herd, who created the company in 2014, will transition to the role of executive chair, focusing on the future innovation of Bumble Inc. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, she expressed her desire to take the company "10 years ahead".

Taking over as the new CEO of Bumble in January 2023 will be Lidiane Jones, the current CEO of workplace communication service Slack. Jones, a seasoned tech executive with experience at Salesforce and Microsoft, plans to bring artificial intelligence (AI) to Bumble's platform to enhance the user experience. She believes that AI can play a significant role in helping individuals find the right connections, whether it be romantic partners, friends, or communities.

Wolfe Herd, at just 34 years old, became the world's youngest self-made female billionaire when she took Bumble public in February 2021. She differentiated Bumble from its competitors by putting women in control of interactions, inspired by her frustration with gender norms in the dating world. On Bumble, only female users can initiate contact with matched male users, and in same-sex matches, either person can make the first move.

However, Bumble's shares have seen a significant decline since its initial public offering. After reaching a high of $75, the stock price dropped to an all-time low of $12.77 following the announcement of Wolfe Herd's departure. This decline mirrors a similar trend in Match Group, Bumble's rival that owns Tinder and Hinge.

Wolfe Herd's journey in the dating app industry began at Tinder, where she was part of the founding team. However, tensions with other executives, including one she had been dating, led her to leave the company. She then launched a sexual harassment case against Tinder's parent company, Match Group Inc., which eventually settled for approximately $1 million.

Bumble has evolved beyond a dating app under Wolfe Herd's leadership. It now operates as the parent company of four apps, including Bumble, Official, Badoo, and Fruitz. The Bumble app has expanded its features to help users find friends and professional connections, broadening its scope beyond romantic relationships.

The leadership transition at Bumble comes at a time of uncertainty for the dating app industry. With the economy facing challenges and persistent inflation impacting tech companies, analysts are concerned that consumers may be less willing to subscribe to dating app services. Match Group recently reported a decline in paying customers, causing a dip in its stock price. Bumble is set to report its earnings for the quarter ended in September, with analysts projecting sales growth but a decline in profits.

Jones will take the reins as CEO of Bumble, bringing her extensive tech experience to the company. She believes that her background in technology will allow her to lead a company focused on women, equality, integrity, and kindness. As Bumble adapts to the changing landscape of the dating app industry, the combination of Wolfe Herd's visionary foundation and Jones' tech expertise may define the future of the company.
